Scientists at Perimeter Institute explore the cutting edge of modern theoretical physics. They grapple with everything from the mind-bending mysteries of the quantum realm to fundamental questions about the universe that inspire awe in people of all ages and backgrounds. Summer at Perimeter is busy and we need your help. We have summer student positions available throughout the Institute, running from May 5, 2025 to August 22, 2025. 


Relying on your exceptional client service experience, the Technology Support Summer Student will provide support for scientific and administrative residents throughout the Institute. Supported by the Infrastructure and Support Services Team, this individual can expect to contribute their knowledge and skillset towards multiple projects connected to various Technology Services teams. They will ultimately help the Institute prepare for a busy launch to the new academic year, in addition to Perimeter’s 25th Anniversary celebrations.

Primary Duties Include:

  • Prioritize, monitor and triage technology requests to appropriate teams and personnel (Ticketing System)
  • Provide technical support and training to end-users
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software issues on end-user devices, printers, and other systems (including cloud technology)
  • Create basic scripts to automate configuration, management, and monitoring of computer systems, applications, and services
  • Test and implement technology standards on laptops and mobile devices
  • Develop technical procedural and end-user KB documentation and maintain various Configuration Management Databases (CMDB)
  • Assist the Audio Visual (AV) team with recordings, technical troubleshooting of AV issues
  • Targeted projects may include: 
    • Support the migration of Windows 10 to 11
    • Assist with building scripts for automation opportunities
    • Help IT Infrastructure team to build an IT Asset Management and track devices
    • Provide support in the development of IT monitoring strategy for Infrastructure systems and services
    • Take part in support of PI 25th anniversary events requiring technology services 

What you need to have:

  • Current or graduating student in post secondary education (college or university) such as desktop support, information technology infrastructure or an Information Technology related field is preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical scenarios to non-technical individuals
  • Strong prioritization, organization and attention to detail
  • Ability to multitask and problem solve 
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn and a professional demeanor 


If we’re being greedy, we’d also like:

  • Basic scripting experience and knowledge (e.g., Bash, PowerShell, etc.)
  • Understanding of networking and information security in end-user devices and large infrastructures
  • Ability to work under pressure with short deadlines in a rapidly changing and highly technical environment
